The tablet records that the person who erected the monument was a disciple of the seventeenth generation of Cao Dong’s authentic sect. Buddhism Zen was founded in Fengdong Mountain, Jiangxi, and the disciple Benji passed on Zen in Caoshan in Jishui. Therefore, this branch of later generations is Caodong School. From this point of view, Zhangbi Guandi Temple has a Buddhist color and should be an authentic Zen temple.
Entering the main hall, the person in the middle is dedicated to Lord Guan Yuguan.
Standing next to him holding the knife was Zhou Cang, and Guan Ping, Guan Yu's son, was holding the seal.
The murals in the hall were painted in the 50th year of Kangxi, that is, in 1711. They were completed at the same time as the existing halls. The paintings are exquisite, and the story of Guan Yu’s life is introduced in the form of 25 comic strips. These murals are painted with pure natural pigments, which are durable and not easy to decolor. In addition, Zhangbi Village is located in the Loess Plateau and the relative humidity is low. Although after more than 300 years, the colors are still gorgeous and the color quality is still clear. A masterpiece of murals in the same period.
Guan Yu was loyal and honest throughout his life. After his death, he was gradually deified. The folks respected him as "Guan Gong", also known as Duke Meiran. Later, he gradually replaced Jiang Ziya's position as the god of war. When Guan Yu was alive, he was given the title of Shouting Hou of Han. After his death, he was favored by the rulers of the past. Various religions also attracted him. Buddhism regarded him as a Garan, and Taoism regarded him as a god. Confucianism also established him as the incarnation of "loyalty, benevolence and courage". The often-speaking four sentences of "loyal to the country, righteous to others, benevolence in doing things, and courage in doing things" are not only a high evaluation of Guan Yu, but also the values that people endorse and pursue. So today, Zhangbi local and nearby villagers still often come to the Guandi Temple to worship Guan Gong in various ways, expressing respect and also begging Lord Guan for protection.
